We’re proud to share that JawSpace V1.0 has been recognised as the highest-rated Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) self-management app in a new independent, peer-reviewed study published in the International Journal for Quality in Health Care (Oxford University Press).

This 2025 systematic review, conducted by researchers from the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University, evaluated all TMD-related self-management apps available in Australia. The study assessed app quality, clinical safety, inclusion of self-management support features, and the backgrounds of developers—including whether people with lived experience of TMD were involved in the design.

JawSpace V1.0 earned the highest overall quality score

Using the widely recognised Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS), JawSpace v1.0 scored:

  • 4.15/5 overall – the highest among all reviewed apps

  • 4.5/5 for functionality

  • 4.5/5 for aesthetics

  • 4.0/5 for information quality

  • 3.6/5 for engagement

The study also confirmed that JawSpace was one of the few apps to provide evidence-based educational content, with clearly cited sources and user-friendly visual information to help users better understand their symptoms.

Clinical safety matters — and JawSpace stands out

The study calls for future TMD app developers to adopt co-design methodologies and prioritise safety and user empowerment—core principles embedded in the JawSpace development process from the start.
The review highlighted clinical safety as a major concern across most apps tested. Alarmingly, one app was flagged as potentially harmful for misidentifying sleep disorders. Others lacked proper warnings or crisis support features.

In contrast, JawSpace V1.0 was praised for its excellent information accuracy and clinical safety, and was one of the only apps that encouraged users to seek medical advice where appropriate.

We’re proud to be setting the benchmark for safe, effective digital support in TMD care. Read the full published paper: https://academic.oup.com/intqhc/advance-article/doi/10.1093/intqhc/mzaf024/8084818

What’s next: JawSpace V2

The study calls for future TMD app developers to adopt co-design methodologies and prioritise safety and user empowerment—core principles embedded in the JawSpace development process from the start.

We’re honoured by this recognition—but we’re not stopping here. V2.0 is already in development, with even greater functionality, improved customisation, and expanded support for long-term management of orofacial pain and dysfunction.

Our mission remains the same: to empower individuals living with TMD through trusted, research-backed tools that help them take control of their care.
